One of the joys of Twitter is that it provides such a wide scope for third party clients, enabling you to choose how you’d like to interact with your timeline. Sometimes you might want to be able to check your tweets without leaving whatever web page you’re viewing. Thankfully there’s a client that can help you out.
Echofon is a Firefox add-on which provides you with a client right there within your browser. It’s ideal if you like to live on the web and use a lot of web based apps. It also provides you with the opportunity to monitor your tweets while watching web video. It’s pretty simple to use and does away with much of the more sophisticated filtering that many clients offer. Instead, the focus is on keeping you up to date.
Once installed, double click the Echofon icon in the Firefox status bar to see your tweets. Right click the icon and choose Preferences to add Twitter accounts, select a theme and make other tweaks. You can change the frequency of updates and the length of time that notification pop-ups are displayed here too. In the main app, you have access to tabs showing your full timeline, any replies you have and your direct messages. There’s no scope for adding Twitter lists or other filtered columns though.
The Firefox add-on is only part of the Echofon family; there are related apps for the iPhone and Mac as well, although these have a wider range of features.
