Remote Mouse Server in Windows
Once set up, Remote Mouse Server sits unobtrusively out of the way.

Your mouse – even if wireless – isn’t always the most practical thing to use to control your computer. It’s perfect if you’re sat at a desk, but these days more and more people find themselves slightly removed from their PC or Mac – often because it’s been hooked up to the TV, typically to watch video or internet TV.

If the idea of hooking up your laptop via cable to your TV, then faffing about on the floor trying to set things up doesn’t appeal, imagine being able to control everything from the comfort of your chair using your smartphone or tablet.

Remote Mouse is a solution for Android users – this is the server part of the software, a tiny download that, once installed, sits quietly in your Notification area or menu bar, ready to leap into action the moment you install and launch the Android app.

Configuration is minimal. By default, the app will only run when launched from the Start > All Programs menu (Windows) or Applications folder (Mac), but you can either right-click its Taskbar icon and choose Auto run (Windows) or manually add it to the Login Items (Mac) to have it always running in the background.

Once set up, fire up the Android app, click Auto Connect and you’re able to control your computer – both mouse and keyboard – remotely. Use it like a touchpad, with support for multi-finger swiping for scrolling, moving between windows and more.

It’s a neat and effective way to control your computer remotely, with one major downside that isn’t advertised on the website: after a few minutes, you’ll see a nag screen pop up on your computer asking you to register the server software. It’s only $2.99, but seeing as there are other, free alternatives out there, it’s a deal breaker in our view.

Note: there is no uninstall utility provided with the program – just delete the MouseServer folder to remove the application.

Verdict:

Perfectly competent piece of software let down by the lack of warning that you’re expected to pay for it after three day’s use.

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Unreal Engine 4.7.2.0

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."
