Explorer is one part of Windows that has changed very little over the years. Even in the most recent version of the operating system, the built in file management tool is almost the same as the version that was included in Windows XP. There are plenty of alternative tools available, but most of these take the same approach to file management and do little to improve things. FileMind takes a different approach and aims to make working with your files faster and easier than ever.

At first glance there may not be much that appears different in FileMind. You’ll see the address bar at the top of the program window and links to your drives in the main pane. However, you will also see that there are shortcuts to all of your drives in the toolbar as well as an extra bar in which you can store links to your most frequently accessed folders.

To the right of the screen there are a series of tags, and these can be used to filter the files that are displayed to help make it easier to find what you are looking for. Using these tags you can home in on files that have been accessed in the last few days, files that have a particular extension and files of a certain type. If you have files littered all over your hard drive rather than being neatly organized, this can be a faster way to track down what you’re looking for.

In addition to this blog-style tag cloud, as you browse through folders, your most frequently accessed files are highlighted to make them stand out. As things stand, FileMind is fast but as it is only in beta we can expect to see improvements made in this area. It is already impressively fast, particularly when it comes to performing certain operations, and the way in which the program works means that drilling down to the files you are looking for is generally faster than in Explorer.

Verdict:

An extremely promising tool that is worth keeping an eye on and a good tool to test out to see what you make of this different approach to file management.

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Unreal Engine 4.8

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."

8.48 brings:
    - Optimized grass rendering and procedural foliage system preview
    - Plugins available in Marketplace
    - Improved accuracy for motion blur
    - New Tone Mapper
    - Support for all the latest VR hardware including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Steam VR and HTC Vive, Leap Motion, and Sony's Project Morpheus for PlayStation 4
    - "Scrubbable" network replays with rewind support and live time scrubbing
    - Visualize the memory footprint of game assets in an interactive tree map UI
