Classic Shell 3.9 Beta
The best alternative Start Menu just got better

Classic Shell is best known for its ability to bring the Start button and menu back to Windows 8. You can also add the same menu to Windows 7, though (maybe useful as it's extremely configurable), and the program also includes a toolbar and status bar for Windows Explorer, and a caption and status bar for Internet Explorer.

This new beta has an enhanced and far more realistic Windows 7 menu style. Programs can be accessed in a tree from the main menu; you can search for files as well as programs, with the results showing inside the main menu; and there's a dedicated shutdown button, as well as the usual menu where you can choose from multiple options (Lock, Restart and so on).

Newly installed programs are now automatically highlighted in the menu, and it can also display the most frequently used programs, all helping you locate the shortcuts you need.

Programs can be pinned directly from Explorer. Classic Shell should launch more reliably on Windows 8, and there's improved compatibility with Windows 8.1, too.

The only wrinkle: Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are no longer supported.

An excellent set of improvements to an already very good program

WhatsApp Messenger 2.12.6

Free Full Commercial Software

WhatsApp Messenger is the world's most popular instant messaging app for smartphones.

You can use it to send and receive text and voice messages, photos, videos, even call your friends in other countries, and because it uses your phone's internet connection it might not cost you anything at all (depending on whether you'll pay data charges).

It's easy to set up and use. There's no need to create and remember new account names or pins because it works with your phone number, and uses your regular address book to find and connect you with friends who use WhatsApp already.

You can talk one-to-one or in group chats, and because you're always logged in there's no way to miss messages. Even if your phone is turned off, WhatsApp will save your messages and display them as soon as you're back online.

There's plenty more (location sharing, contact exchange, message broadcasting) and the app is free for a year, currently $0.99/ year afterwards.

Version 2.12.6 brings:

• Whatsapp web - send and receive messages from your computer browser!
