The Windows world is packed with programs to help organise your music, but finding the right tool to keep your movie collection in order is a little more challenging. There are some very good candidates around, though, especially if you're willing to look at commercial solutions, and Movie Label 2011 is one of the best.

The program offers many ways to start building your database, for instance: you can type a title, scan a bar code, import details from a text file if you already have a database, even have the program search your hard drive for movie files.

If there are several possible matches, then Movie Label will display them all: so entering Alien would return Alien, Aliens, Alien: Resurrection, and so on. Just choose the one you need and the cover art, plot details, cast, credit, IMDB rating and other details on the movie will all be speedily downloaded. At which point you can start again, entering another title, and repeating the process until the database holds your entire collection.

Why bother? One reason is simply to find out more about your favourite movies, because there's a lot of information available. We added Alien: Resurrection, for instance, and along with the usual credits appeared almost 900 words on interesting facts and figures surrounding the film.

Movie Label can also mark particular movies as "on loan", very handy if you're always giving out DVDs to people and then forgetting to ask for them back.

You're able to mark other movies as "Wanted Items", films you don't own yet but would like to buy. And not necessarily for yourself, either: if you like to give movies as presents then this could help you get organised.

And other welcome bonus extras include the ability to give movies your own ratings, record when you last watched them, or print out details of your collection with a wide range of reports.
