Colonize and control the New World

FreeCol is an open source clone of Sid Meier's excellent turn-based strategy game, Colonization.

The story starts in 1492. You lead a tiny band of settlers who've just arrived in America, with just one goal: to make the country your own. But these are challenging times. You'll need to earn money by producing goods and sending them back to Europe. There are cities to build and manage, and new technologies to learn. And there's another complication: you're not alone.

Other European powers are building colonies of their own, expanding their borders and becoming all too powerful. War can't be too far away.

And then there are the native Americans. Will you become their friends, learn new skills and trade with them? Or attack their villages and take what they have by force? It's your call.

The ultimate objective is to become powerful enough to declare your independence from Europe. The King won't like it, and an attack force will be sent, but if you've prepared well, and are strong enough to defeat it, then congratulations are due - you've won the game. And now you've mastered the basics, you can try the multiplayer features, and pit your skills against other players.

What's new in 0.11.3?

- Windows installer fixes BR#2790
- Blocked settlements no longer shown as destinations, BR#2791
- Plural rules were not loading correctly in automatic language mode
- Colony tiles can be reclaimed by neighbours when the colony is captured
- Native settlement alarm indicators are always shown after contact BR#2798
- Multiplayer mode works again BR#2811
- Trade routes are suspended if a stop is lost BR#2797

- Fixed disagreement between recruit turns and Religious Advisor BR#2808
- Fix trade logging amounts BR#2814
- Reduced chance of game window being too large and partially hidden behind the task bar
- Improved AboutDialog, from Calebrw

Verdict:

FreeCol is a Java project, which means performance is below average, but this remains a compelling and addictive strategy game

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Unreal Engine 4.7.2.0

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."
