Gmail Inbox Notifier
Check for new emails with Gmail Inbox Notifier

Google's Gmail or Google Mail service - the name differs depending on when you created an account and which part of the world you are in - revolutionised web based email by offering ever-expanding storage space which means there is no need to delete emails. Features such as threaded conversations and checking of other email accounts have seen the service gain a huge following.

While you can use an email client to check your inbox for new messages, this almost defeats the purpose of using a web based email service. With many email client being slow and resource hungry, it is little surprise that many Google Mail users rely on frequent check of their inbox to see if new email has arrived.

Gmail Inbox Notifier is a small tool that sits in the system tray and periodically checks for the arrival of new messages, display an alert when one is received. Clicking the pop up that is displayed will transport you to your inbox ready to read the mail. You can choose who often the program should check for new messages, or opt to perform manual checks whenever you like.

The program can be configured to start automatically with Windows and the context menu of the system tray icon provides access to a number of Google related options. You can use the menu to compose a new message as well as accessing other Google services such as Reader and Calendar.

Verdict:

This is a tiny, lightweight program that uses very few system resources and is a great way to keep on top of your inbox.

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Unreal Engine 4.8

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."

8.48 brings:
    - Optimized grass rendering and procedural foliage system preview
