FreeRIP is a straightforward CD ripper, with a bonus audio converter, ID3 v1/2 tagger and other tools thrown in.

The ripper works just as you'd expect. Insert an audio CD, freedb support means it'll usually be recognised, the artist and track names displayed. Choose your destination file type (MP3, OGG, WMA, FLAC, WAV) and folder, click "Rip Disc", and your tracks will quickly be saved to disk.

The audio converter and MP3 tagger work in much the same way. Click View > Converter, say, and import your source audio files. Choose your output format from the same list, click Convert, and watch as the new music files are created.

There's also a simple audio CD burner, which again is very easy to use. Add a few audio files, optionally set your preferred write speed, and click "Burn Disc".

If you do need more control, there are a few low-level settings in the Options dialog. You can choose your default file format pattern, audio quality, output folder and more.

There's also a commercial PRO version which offers better performance, and "unlimited bulk file conversions".

Please note, our FreeRIP download would by default have installed several browser extensions, and set Yahoo! as our browser default for just about everything. If that doesn't appeal, watch closely during installation, click the "Custom install" option when it appears, and clear the relevant checkboxes.

Verdict:

FreeRIP doesn't have the best interface, but it's easy enough to use and has a good range of audio functions and features.
