QRemoteControl 2.4.1
Control your desktop from an Android device

QRemoteControl is a customisable tool which can control your desktop (PC, Mac or Linux) from a mobile device - Android, BlackBerry, MeeGo, Symbian or Sailfish - via wifi.

Setup can be very straightforward. We launched the server component on our Windows 8.1 PC (it's portable, so no installation required), then installed and ran the Android client. Clicking "Search servers" on our phone ran a quick network scan, listing the PC's IP address, and after clicking this we were connected.

The standard control layout is uninspired, but experiment for a moment and you'll soon figure out how everything works. There are cursor keys, an "Enter", backspace and a "Close" button. You can zoom in and out, simulate Alt+Tab, and control media playback in various ways (Play/ Pause, Back, Next, Volume up/ down, Mute, more).

If this isn't enough, your remote control can also act as a touchpad, and a keyboard.

A "User Commands" section provides custom buttons which can be tweaked to launch whatever program or shortcuts you need.

Perhaps best of all, there are plenty of configuration options. This starts at a simple user level, with the ability to set a custom icon for each User Command button, or apply some basic skin tweaks. You're also able to replace the standard buttons with your preferred keyboard shortcuts. And low-level options covering network communications, cursor acceleration, scroll speeds and more are very helpful in making sure the program works just as you'd like.

Please note, the downloads we're linking to here are for the Windows, Mac and Linux servers, and the Android client. For the other mobile clients, please go here.

Verdict:

QRemoteControl didn't always work as we expected. The touchpad would occasionally stop responding until we took our finger off the screen, while for some reason the Alt+Tab button didn't work at all. The program is also easy to set up, simple to use and very configurable, though: if you need a PC remote control then it's definitely worth a try.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 (v11.0.6)

Free Full Commercial Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 is a compact, simple, but surprisingly feature-packed disc burning suite.

The program makes it easy to create simple data discs and audio CDs, for instance: just drag and drop your files onto the list area and you'll be burning the finished disc in a couple of clicks.

That's just the start, though. Burning Studio 2013 can also create data discs with customised, interactive multi-page menus, perfect if you'd like a more professional way to share and present the disc contents.

A built-in backup tool allows you to create backups which may be encrypted, compressed, and span several CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays.

And there are modules to create VCD or SVCD video projects; burn video DVDs or Blu-ray discs from prepared folders; create, browse or burn disc images (ISO, CUE/ BIN and Ashdisc formats are supported); copy discs, erase them, design and print disc covers, labels and booklets, and more.

The focus throughout is on ease of use, though, and so Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 remains very straightforward, whatever you're doing. Most disc projects are created via the same simple interface, and for the most part all you have to do is drag and drop the necessary files. But experts will find more advanced options are only a click away, and if you need to then you can set ISO and UDF version, enable Joliet, make a disc bootable and more.

Note the download here will take you to the Downloadcrew Software Store where you can download Burning Studio 2013.
