Panda Cloud Antivirus FREE 2.3
Panda Cloud Antivirus adds a firewall to its armoury with this latest release.

When you come to install security software on your computer, many people make the mistake of assuming the Windows Firewall is perfectly adequate for their needs. It’s not: by default, the Firewall offers inbound protection only, which means while it’ll protect you from any threats that originate on the internet, it does nothing to help thwart threats that get on to your system from elsewhere, such as Trojans, fake software and other malicious software that sneaks past your system’s defences.

That means that while free anti-virus software is a welcome addition to your PC’s armoury, on its own it’s nowhere near sufficient to protect you from all those nasty threats out there. That means installing a third-party firewall, and while free firewalls have got better and better over time, they’re still a little fiddly to configure and often throw up lots of unhelpful and annoying prompts that often lead to people taking risks with their security just to get them out of the way.

Perhaps mindful of this, Panda has decided to bundle (Pro version only, a $29.95 purchase) a community-based firewall with version 2.0 of its cloud-based anti-virus package. The firewall is designed to automatically set rules for known applications and processes, reducing the number of prompts you see when an unknown program attempts to connect to the network or internet. This ensures that – for the most part – it can be left to its own devices.

You’re then left with the same lightweight cloud-based anti-virus as before. It provides real-time protection using the latest virus signatures backed up by the “cloud-based” part of the protection, which basically translates as freeing up system resources by doing all the analysis of your files over the internet, resulting in a lighter, faster package.

Sadly there are no automated scans offered; instead, just click the Scan button to manually run an optimised scan or choose to scan your entire computer on semi-regular basis.

Potentially dangerous items are quarantined in the program’s Recycle Bin, where you can easily restore them if necessary from the main interface. The program also comes with a browser toolbar for IE and Firefox that aims to help steer you away from dangerous websites. It’s no substitute for a dedicated tool such as MyWOT, though.

As free solutions go, Panda is unfussy, uncomplicated and lightweight, making it a good choice for the budget-conscious who are running Windows on an under-powered setup. It offers a reasonable level of protection too.

Build 2.3 ships with these new features/fixes:

- Important performance improvements (on-demand scans and permanent protection)
- Adds some changes to better integrate with Windows 8.1
- Includes a new version of Panda Security Toolbar
Fixed console crashes that could appear under certain conditions
Fixed problems detected on some PCs during product upgrade
Fixed some linguistic errors3

Verdict:

A good choice for those looking for a simple, lightweight and - above all - free anti-virus combo.

Good detection rate Extremely lightweight

I decided to try this one (the Free version) after having constant problems with Avast 8 not initializing the GUI on boot-up (or showing non-existent shield errors) and conflicting with Thunderbird (you can't send mail because of an error of Avast mail shield) and i must say that i'm surprised with Panda's efficiency and amazing light footprint on your system (Cpu & Ram) AVcomparatives.org reports give it a 97.7% detection rate which is right up with some major names. Also you don't have to worry about daily updates or anything else. Due to it's cloud nature, it's constantly updated and also won't give you false positives! It also scans your system in the background but you won't notice any lags If you want more in-depth scans you can complement Panda with the several free AV scan-only like Kaspersky, Emsisoft or McAfee and run one of those once a week like i do... you also have the excellent MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Free to scan for malware and spyware so you don't need to spend money to be protected!

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 (v11.0.6)

Free Full Commercial Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 is a compact, simple, but surprisingly feature-packed disc burning suite.

The program makes it easy to create simple data discs and audio CDs, for instance: just drag and drop your files onto the list area and you'll be burning the finished disc in a couple of clicks.

That's just the start, though. Burning Studio 2013 can also create data discs with customised, interactive multi-page menus, perfect if you'd like a more professional way to share and present the disc contents.

A built-in backup tool allows you to create backups which may be encrypted, compressed, and span several CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays.

And there are modules to create VCD or SVCD video projects; burn video DVDs or Blu-ray discs from prepared folders; create, browse or burn disc images (ISO, CUE/ BIN and Ashdisc formats are supported); copy discs, erase them, design and print disc covers, labels and booklets, and more.

The focus throughout is on ease of use, though, and so Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 remains very straightforward, whatever you're doing. Most disc projects are created via the same simple interface, and for the most part all you have to do is drag and drop the necessary files. But experts will find more advanced options are only a click away, and if you need to then you can set ISO and UDF version, enable Joliet, make a disc bootable and more.

Note the download here will take you to the Downloadcrew Software Store where you can download Burning Studio 2013.
