Free Video Converter is an easy-to-use tool for converting videos between different formats.
The program installs without problems, and, unusually for this type of tool, doesn't attempt to install a host of browser toolbars (or any other unwanted extras).
A click of the "Add Files" button will then import source videos in all the major formats: 3GP, AVI, DPG, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, MPG, OGM, WEBM, WMV, VOB, and more. While a convenient Preview window shows you the currently selected clip, and allows you to trim unwanted footage from the start or end of the movie.
The Presets button displays your various output options. There are 1080i and 720p HD options if you're going to play the converted video on a computer, for instance; you're able to produce FLV files for the web in various quality settings; and there are links to create movies for various devices (the iPhone, iPod, iPad, Xbox 360, Android devices, the PSP or PS3), as well as just extract the soundtrack to an audio file.
But if you need more control, an Output Settings pane allows you to define codecs, resolution, frame rate, bit rate and more.
And when you're happy, clicking Convert will convert your videos accordingly.
The program has some irritations. When converting videos for use on a PC, for instance, we mostly like to keep the same resolution in the finished clip, but that doesn't seem possible here. The presets all have their own specific resolution, there's no "same as source" option.
Still, the program is fast, easy to use and with plenty of features, and if you've had issues with other video conversion tools then it may serve you well.
