avast! Free Antivirus 8 FINAL
avast! 8 has a new gui, new tools and features

avast! Free Antivirus 8 is the avast's next-generation security package, which now comes with a new interface and more extras and options than ever before.

Installation was quick and easy on a test Windows 7 system. If you're familiar with the product then you'll immediately notice the new interface. A compact and clean Home Page separates the beta's key functions into six panes, and clicking Scan for the first time immediately launched a Quick Scan. The scan window still presents plenty of details and options for the various shields, though - File System, Mail, Web, P2P, IM, Network, Script and Behavior - so there's plenty here to explore.

A left-hand toolbar also provides access to some interesting new tools. Software Updater checks your installed applications and alerts you to any available updates; Browser Cleanup aims to help you remove annoying addons from your browsers (although only IE and Firefox at the moment, at least on our system); and AccessAnywhere allows you to set up remote access to your PC. Some of these will apparently only be available via a commercial option called avast! Premier.

And of course there have also been improvements to the core protection technologies, so for instance FileRep and WebRep are now better able to identify and new threats in near real time.

Build 8.0.1489 brings these changes:

• BSOD fix in aswTdi.sys
• Fixed WebRep crashes in IE
• Fixed WebRep FF issue with not saving the position
• SecureLine stability improvements

Verdict:

avast's latest looks good and has some interesting new features, but beware - there are some significant beta bugs, too

Avast Free Antivirus 8.0 on Windows XP

Posted by: Ian Martin, 06 March 2013 04:44

When upgrading existing Avast 7.0 to the new package on my PC running XP Pro SP3, when restarted my PC would start to boot then constantly give me a BSOD with the message PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. It was impossible to rectify the problem as the PC would keep shutting down. As this was the only software change installed, it was necessary to boot into Safe Mode and uninstall Avast Antivirus 8.0, including using Avast Clear, to enable me to boot to a stable computer. I then reinstalled Avast 7.0 which is again running with no issues. So I do not recommend upgrading to this version on XP.

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 (v11.0.6)

Free Full Commercial Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 is a compact, simple, but surprisingly feature-packed disc burning suite.

The program makes it easy to create simple data discs and audio CDs, for instance: just drag and drop your files onto the list area and you'll be burning the finished disc in a couple of clicks.

That's just the start, though. Burning Studio 2013 can also create data discs with customised, interactive multi-page menus, perfect if you'd like a more professional way to share and present the disc contents.

A built-in backup tool allows you to create backups which may be encrypted, compressed, and span several CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays.

And there are modules to create VCD or SVCD video projects; burn video DVDs or Blu-ray discs from prepared folders; create, browse or burn disc images (ISO, CUE/ BIN and Ashdisc formats are supported); copy discs, erase them, design and print disc covers, labels and booklets, and more.

The focus throughout is on ease of use, though, and so Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 remains very straightforward, whatever you're doing. Most disc projects are created via the same simple interface, and for the most part all you have to do is drag and drop the necessary files. But experts will find more advanced options are only a click away, and if you need to then you can set ISO and UDF version, enable Joliet, make a disc bootable and more.

Note the download here will take you to the Downloadcrew Software Store where you can download Burning Studio 2013.
