While it’s true that certain notifications sent to your iPhone or iPad also get sent to your Mac, they tend to be iCloud linked and limited to network notifications, such as new Tweets or a Facebook message.

Having to fish your iPhone out of your pocket or remember to check it regularly for new notifications from any app isn’t always practical, particularly if you’re hard at work beavering away at something important on your Mac. Before you know it, that important notification you were waiting for has come and gone and you’re wondering where all that time went.

No more. Notifyr is a cross-platform solution designed to relay any notification you receive on your iPhone or iPad to your Mac’s Notification Center. First, download the Mac version. Double-click the zip file and then open the PrefPane file that appears, which will verify your Mac can run the app and then install it. Once done, install the $3.99 Notifyr app on your iPhone or iPad.

Once installed on both devices, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both Mac and iOS device. Open the Notifyr System Preferences pane and install the helper app if prompted, then verify it’s switched on.

Now click Select Device and launch the Notifyr app on your mobile, making sure you’re in portrait mode to reveal the all-important Authorize button at the bottom of the screen. Tap and click Allow when prompted, then tap Continue. After a short pause you should see your iOS device appear on your Mac – select it and click Connect, then follow the prompts to pair the two

It’s all a little fiddly if we’re honest, but when you’ve finally got things sorted, you can hide the Notifyr app and all notifications should now be diverted to your Mac’s Notification Center.

At some point you may receive a notification from an app you don’t need reminders from – once Notifyr has sent one notification from that app, its name will appear in the Notifyr preferences pane, at which point you can choose to "mute" it by removing the tick next to an unwanted app. You’ll definitely need to do this with apps that duplicate notifications already sent via your Mac, such as the aforementioned Twitter notifications.

Verdict:

An intriguing app that shows promise, but it’s fiddly to set up and configure – persevere though, and the rewards are worth it.
