WinZip 22.5
Open, create and share your archives using this comprehensive commercial archive manager

It's been around for a very long time, but somehow veteran archiving tool WinZip still manages to find new ways to build on its already comprehensive feature set. And this edition is mostly about the cloud.

WinZip makes it much easier to work with cloud files, for example, whether it's grabbing files from your accounts, saving an archive there, saving files between services, or sharing links to your cloud files via email, instant messaging or social media.

The program now supports more cloud services, too: Box, CloudMe, Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, SugarSync and ZipSend.

Wherever your files are going, an optimised zip engine means they'll be smaller than ever before.

There are now separate "WinZip Express Add-Ons" which bring common WinZip features to Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, Photos and SharePoint. Right-clicking a file in Explorer, say, opens a WinZip dialog with basic archive, encryption and sharing tools, while the Outlook add-on helps you send large files. As we write the Explorer add-on is free with the purchase of WinZip 18, while the others are $9.95 each.

And of course there are all the features from the previous edition. You can open just about any archive, or create one of your own; there's fast archiving with optional strong encrption; you get JPEG compression of up to 25% with no loss of quality; and there's a built-in "convert to PDF" tool, image conversion and watermarking tools, a direct "zip and email" feature which works with most of the main services, and the list goes on (and on, and on).

Note: the download is an installer stub, which will offer to include additional, potentially unwanted, programs as part of the download.

What's new in WinZip 22.5 (see 'What's New' for more info)?

- Replace Zip Files with their Content - Quickly and easily unzip a group of Zip files and replace them with the unzipped files.
- Create a split Zip file from Explorer - Select files and/or folders, right-click, and select Create Split Zip file. No need to create a whole, single Zip file first.
- Automatic computer shutdown - Have WinZip shut down your computer for you after running an automatic backup. Pro and Enterprise only.
- Files Pane tabs - Open, view, and manage different folders at the same time in the WinZip Files pane.
- Folder Trees - Navigate easily through your combined computer, network and cloud folder layout in WinZip's Files pane using the Folder Tree view.
- Track the files you share with ZipShare - The Shared Files dashboard, using ZipShare, in the Files pane allows you to easily keep track of which files you have shared.
- Enhanced link sharing from the cloud - With a right click, easily share a link to existing files or folders in your cloud services.

Verdict:

It's not cheap, but WinZip 19 effortlessly outperforms the freeware competition, and if you need real archiving power then it's definitely worth a look.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update (build 1809)

Free Full Commercial Software

This is the latest version of Windows October 2018 Update. it's a media creation tool that can be used to upgrade an existing installation of Windows or create installation media for another PC. Just make your choice after launching the tool and it'll do the rest.

What was new in Windows 10, when it was released? The OS brought back the Start Menu, though with a Windows 8 twist: live tiles keep you up-to-date with the latest news while also providing an easy way to launch apps. (Don't worry if you prefer the Start Screen, it's still there and you can boot into it if you prefer.)

Apps now work much more like regular desktop programs. They have minimise, maximise, restore and close buttons, and can be resized (to a degree) and organised however you like.

If you've still lost track of a program in the mass of open windows, a new Task Spaces feature can help. Click its taskbar button and you'll see thumbnails for everything running now, a little like OS X's Mission Control - just click something to switch to it.

Better still, Task Spaces also supports virtual desktops. Add extra desktops as required and it'll display thumbnails of each one, making it easy to identify whatever you're after and switch to it.

There's also smarter snapping, new customisation options, and even a bunch of experimental additions to the command prompt.

Fall Creators Update brings a whole host of new features for Windows 10. See the Microsoft Blog for more information.

The Windows 10 ISO here will give you build 1809 which is the October 2018 Update.
