View RAW file formats in Explorer with Microsoft’s Camera Codec Pack

14 August 2012, Mike Williams

If you’re looking to browse your camera’s RAW format images on a PC then your first instinct will probably be to locate a suitably powerful image viewer. But there could be a simpler solution.

Microsoft’s Camera Codec Pack supports the viewing of a host of device-specific formats in Explorer, Windows Live Photo and any other Windows Imaging Codecs-based software, and it’s free and straightforward to use.

Just download the version you need; the Codec Pack comes in 32-bit and 64-bit flavours. (Both require either Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7, unfortunately.)

There's no interface, nothing to set up - just install the Codec Pack and start browsing your RAW images

Run the installer, allow it to proceed to completion, reboot when requested, and that’s essentially it. You should now be able to view thumbnails of your RAW images within Explorer, so you can browse them without needing any third-party tools at all.

The Codec Pack has its limits. In particular its support for some manufacturers is far better than others, but if your camera is on the list (and the Pack has just been updated with a few new examples) then it’s probably worth the download.

Here’s the full list of supported devices.
