Eye Pro 3.0
Cut the risk of eye strain when using a PC

Eye Pro is an interesting tool which uses several techniques to try and reduce the chance of eye strain when you're using a PC.

Looking at a monitor (or any other close-up object, actually) for a very long time can leave your eyes feeling tired, for instance, so the program will prompt you to take regular breaks. Nothing major - just a short break of 8 seconds every 15 minutes, and a longer break of 1 minute every 45 - but that's enough for you to focus on something further away for a while, which could make all the difference.

Eye Pro also provides "screen filters", coloured overlays which appear over your desktop. If there's a lot of bright blue on the screen, for example, the authors say applying the blue filter should neutralise screen glare and make your system more comfortable to view.

A "Vision Therapy" section provides various simple animations and games which the authors claim may improve your eye health. You can watch a ball bounce around the screen, for instance, or try to see the image in a 3D stereogram.

And a handy "Usage Stats" section tracks and reports on Eye Pro's effectiveness, by highlighting how often you take short breaks, and how many times you skip them.

Eye Pro probably won't help you get rid of your glasses, then, but it is a versatile program with a lot of options, and if you're concerned about the effects of lengthy PC sessions on your eyesight then we'd certainly give it a try.

Verdict:

Eye Pro tricks and technologies may vary in their usefulness, but there's still plenty here to help improve your eye health

Spektrel Art 1.0.0

Free Full Commercial Software

Spektrel Art is a stand-alone program and Photoshop plugin which transforms digital photos into "magical art that glimmers and gleams with intersecting lines of tapered light".

What does that mean? Essentially it applies a configurable mix of effects, enhancing edges, smoothing backgrounds and emphasizing colours. Take a look at the thumbnail for one example, and the official product page has more.

Spektral Art works much like any similar tool. Open an image, click one of the thumbnails to apply a particular preset, or click a few buttons and drag some sliders to fine-tune the results.

There's surprising scope for variation, too. For example, just switching from the "Light" to "Dark" theme can transform a bright and friendly image into something dark and sinister, at least in some cases (results vary depending on the source image).

Please note, the demo version doesn't allow images to be saved.

SPECIAL OFFER: as we write, the developer is offering Spektral Art for free. The offer expires August 29th. Please note that you must provide your name, address and phone number to receive your free license.
