Think video editing on your iPhone, and Apple’s own iMovie app springs to mind. But if you’re serious about editing video on your mobile, and you’re willing to shell out more than twice as much, then Pinnacle Studio is the app you need.
It scores points for being both easy to use and powerful at the same time, although the fact not all features are free after your initial purchase can rankle at times. Nevertheless, the user interface – recently overhauled for an iOS 7-friendly look – is relatively straightforward to get to grips with.
The app – which lets you drag video, photos and music to a storyboard or timeline, offers everything you need for editing your clips, from rearranging them to trimming unwanted details. A precision timer helps you trim frame-by-frame if necessary, and putting together an edited video doesn’t take too long.
From here you’re able to introduce multi-layered (and 3D) animations, filters, titles and transitions as well as various other special effects, including both slow and fast motion. Pinnacle Studio even supports picture-in-picture effects as well as pan and zoom effects should you decide to use it to create a photo-based slideshow.
You can overlay background music or add in one of 150 sound effects, mixing it all in with the original soundtrack and finish things off with a voiceover track if required – up to three audio tracks can be mixed at once, all of which can be trimmed independently of the video.
Then it’s a case of creating some stunning titles and your finished movie or slideshow is ready for sharing. You can upload it to Facebook, YouTube and Box - unlike the iPad version, there's no paid-for expansion offering a wider array of online services.
The end result is an app that delivers superb results thanks to a powerful feature-set without overwhelming the average user in the process. If you’re looking to create professional and eye-catching video on your iPhone, then Pinnacle Studio is the app to choose.
