Troubleshoot program startup problems

The Prefetcher is a Windows component which records the files loaded when an application starts, so that the system can optimise its launch time in future.

WinPrefetchView is a compact portable tool which displays these records, helping you to see the applications being launched on your PC, and which files are being loaded when they start.

The program has a two pane interface. At the top is a list of the individual prefetch files, including their name, creation time, modified time, size, process name, process path, last run time, and more.

Conveniently, the table can be sorted by any column. Click the "Last Run Time" column header, say, and you'll see the programs that have been run most recently on your system, handy if it's used by others and you want to see what they've been doing.

Click any individual prefetch file and the lower pane shows you the files loaded when that application starts (or for the first 10 seconds of its launch time, anyway).

This report is much more technical, usually just a list of DLLs, fonts, INI files and whatever else a program might use at startup. Still, if you're trying to troubleshoot some technical issue - a slow launch time, perhaps - it just might provide the clue you need.

Version 1.25 brings:
    - Added 'Explorer Copy - Prefetch File' and 'Explorer Copy - Process File' options.

Verdict:

Prefetching is a very technical topic, but fortunately you don't have to understand it to get something from WinPrefetchView. The ability to see which programs have been recently launched on your PC probably justifies the download, all on its own.

Unreal Engine 4.8

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."

8.48 brings:
    - Optimized grass rendering and procedural foliage system preview
    - Plugins available in Marketplace
    - Improved accuracy for motion blur
    - New Tone Mapper
    - Support for all the latest VR hardware including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Steam VR and HTC Vive, Leap Motion, and Sony's Project Morpheus for PlayStation 4
    - "Scrubbable" network replays with rewind support and live time scrubbing
    - Visualize the memory footprint of game assets in an interactive tree map UI
