yEd Graph Editor
Easily create stylish and detailed diagrams

yEd Graph Editor is an easy-to-use tool for creating and editing diagrams.

The program works much like many similar applications. You'll choose your symbols from a palette (flowchart, UML, ERD, BPNM, network, computer, more), drag and drop them onto the page, and position them as you like. Symbols may then be customised with text, colours, URLs and more, before you join them up with lines to represent your structure or ideas.

The symbols on offer are more visually appealing than some of the free competition, which is an immediate plus. YEd isn't just about creating complicated charts for technical documents: it could be just as useful when designing something simple but attractive for a presentation.

It's easy to pick up the diagramming basics, too. When drawing a line between two symbols, say, you don't have to select a Line tool, look for symbol "handles" or anything else: just left-click somewhere over one symbol, hold the mouse button down and drag to another symbol, release and the line appears.

YEd can import data from GraphML files, XLS/ XLSX spreadsheets, GML/ XGML and more. But the real surprise was support for GEDCOM, the genealogy format. Not only does this allow yEd to import and display your family tree, it even offers some fine control over the process, for example choosing exactly which tags you'd like to import.

Export options are another highlight. You're not just restricted to saving your graphs as regular images (GIF, JPG, PNG), the program can also export EPS, SVG/ SVGX and PDF. There's even an HTML page with a custom Flash viewer, complete with its own chart panning, zoom and print controls.

Version 3.16 brings: (Changelog):

New Features

Added import support for the GraphML file format variants of our commercial yFiles diagramming libraries yFiles for Java 3.x, yFiles for JavaFX, yFiles.NET, yFiles WPF, and yFiles for HTML. With the yFiles for HTML format in particular, import of GraphML files written by the yEd Live web application is also supported.
As a new option, the Hierarchical layout algorithm can take the thickness of an edge into account when calculating a layout for a diagram. Diagrams with thick edges in them can become wider and taller.
As a new option, the Hierarchical layout algorithm can interpret edge direction according to the arrowhead.
The integrated labeling in the Hierarchical layout algorithm places edge labels that specify a preferred placement at their source node or at their target node directly beside that node.
Applying the Label Placement algorithm is now animated. Also, its execution can be canceled if it takes too long.

Improvements

Additional sample node representations for nodes and group nodes in the 'Shape Nodes' and 'Group Nodes' palette section.
The JREs that are installed by the Windows, Mac, and Linux installers have been updated to Java 1.8.0_92.

Verdict:

YEd is easy for beginners to pick up, yet also provides the advanced controls experts need. Its diagrams look great, they're very configurable, and a host of export options gives you plenty of ways to share them with the world.

Spektrel Art 1.0.0

Free Full Commercial Software

Spektrel Art is a stand-alone program and Photoshop plugin which transforms digital photos into "magical art that glimmers and gleams with intersecting lines of tapered light".

What does that mean? Essentially it applies a configurable mix of effects, enhancing edges, smoothing backgrounds and emphasizing colours. Take a look at the thumbnail for one example, and the official product page has more.

Spektral Art works much like any similar tool. Open an image, click one of the thumbnails to apply a particular preset, or click a few buttons and drag some sliders to fine-tune the results.

There's surprising scope for variation, too. For example, just switching from the "Light" to "Dark" theme can transform a bright and friendly image into something dark and sinister, at least in some cases (results vary depending on the source image).

Please note, the demo version doesn't allow images to be saved.

SPECIAL OFFER: as we write, the developer is offering Spektral Art for free. The offer expires August 29th. Please note that you must provide your name, address and phone number to receive your free license.
