TRIM Enabler 2.0 FINAL released, boosts SSD performance on Macs

24 January 2012, Nick Peers

Hot on the heels of a fifth Beta release last week, TRIM Enabler 2.0 has been given a final, stable release. TRIM Enabler 2.0, which extends TRIM support to non-Apple SSDs in OS X Lion, features a complete rewrite and new way of enabling TRIM by patching existing SSD drivers rather than replacing them.

Recent updates have also improved the speed of the patching process, plus TRIM Enabler now automatically updates when changes have been made instead of requiring a manual refresh. The final release has also introduced a new automatic update checker, allowing users to be prompted when a new version is released.

TRIM Enabler 2.0 exists because OS X Lion only supports the TRIM command – a technology designed to keep SSDs running at optimum performance over a prolonged period of data writes and deletes – on Apple SSD drives. By extending TRIM support to cheaper, non-Apple SSDs, TRIM Enabler opens up a wider choice for Mac users when picking a SSD drive.

The first major release of TRIM Enabler simply replaced the existing SSD driver with an older version that supported TRIM. The new version patches whatever driver is currently installed with the necessary TRIM support, a more satisfactory approach to the process.

Version 2.0 was completely rewritten in 100% Objective C, and also features a built-in SMART tool allowing users to easily monitor the physical health of their SSD drive over time. Lion users wishing to upgrade from version 1.0 to 2.0 should follow the advice posted to resurrect the original driver before installing and running version 2.0.

Trim Enabler 2.0 is a freeware download for Apple Macs with non-Apple SSDs running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7.x (Lion).
