MemInfo 3.33
Track RAM use from your system tray

MemInfo is a tiny tool which can help you find out more about how your PC RAM is being used.

At its simplest, the program can just leave an icon in your system tray to highlight your current RAM consumption (you might have it display the percentage used, for instance). This is clearly very basic, but it's still enough to be useful, as you'll soon notice if, say, your free RAM is dropping over time, or falls particularly when you're running a certain application.

Simply hovering your mouse cursor over the MemInfo icon will reveal more details, as the program displays the precise amount of RAM available and used, as well as details on your system's paging file.

If it looks like your free RAM is falling for some reason, right-click the icon and MemInfo will show you more statistics, including a list of the ten processes which are currently using the most memory. Clicking on any of these will display more details on the program, as well as giving you options to free up RAM from that process, or close it down entirely.

There's even a "memory defragmenter" option, which the authors claim may "speed up your computer by maximizing the available free memory", although for most people we suspect it probably won't make any difference at all.

MemInfo is highly configurable, too, so if you don't like some aspect of the program, just right-click its system tray icon, click Settings and start browsing: there's probably a tweak there which will allow you to change things.

And while MemInfo will of course use some RAM itself, fortunately it's extremely lightweight. On our test PC it consumed less than 1MB RAM (and often much less), so should run happily in the background just about anywhere.

Version 3.32 has the following changes:

    - Check for new version is now automatic as soon as the About box is shown
    - Added a new option to double click tray icon: Show Windows Shutdown Dialog
    - Added an option to show the process name instead of the module (eg: "mspaint.exe" or "Paint")
    - Fixed: Warning on high memory usage will only warn again after 5 minutes (to avoid consecutive Warnings)
    - Support for Windows 8.1
    - Minor bug fixes

Verdict:

Normally Windows manages your RAM just fine on its own, but if you're currently having problems then MemInfo may be able to help you find out more about your system's memory use

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Unreal Engine 4.8

Free Full Commercial Software

Unreal Engine is Epic Games' game engine, a powerful suite of tools for developing anything from basic 2D games to professional RPGs, first person shooters and whatever else you like.

Wide standards support - DirectX, OpenGL, JavaScript/ WebGL - means your projects can be targeted to almost any platform: consoles, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, HTML5 browsers and more.

There's a vast amount to learn, of course, and that's even before you start building your game. But there's plenty of documentation, tutorials, demos and sample projects to point you in the right direction.

The package is now entirely free, too - no annoying limitations, nag screens or anything else. Epic now only requires that you pay a 5% royalty after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. And even then, you "pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization."

8.48 brings:
    - Optimized grass rendering and procedural foliage system preview
    - Plugins available in Marketplace
    - Improved accuracy for motion blur
    - New Tone Mapper
    - Support for all the latest VR hardware including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Steam VR and HTC Vive, Leap Motion, and Sony's Project Morpheus for PlayStation 4
    - "Scrubbable" network replays with rewind support and live time scrubbing
    - Visualize the memory footprint of game assets in an interactive tree map UI
